A new method to improve tribological properties of titanium by means of Al-Mg intermetallics matrix composite coatings

Abstract
In this study, the Al/Mg powders were firstly used to improve the wear resistance of titanium by mean of the laser cladding technique, which owned a great potential in the field of the surface modifications. The synthesis of the hard composite coating on pure Ti by laser cladding of the Al-Mg-B4C or Al-Mg-B4C-Fe pre-placed powders was investigated in detail. SEM results indicated that a Al-Mg intermetallics matrix composite coating with metallurgical joint to the substrate was formed. Compared with pure Ti, the improvement of the micro-hardness and the wear resistance was observed for such composite coating.
