 Abstract
This paper shows that the addition of magnesium can improve the structural homogeneity of NiTi shape memory alloy produced by Self-propagating High-temperature Synthesis (SHS) by lowering the amount of undesirable brittle Ti2Ni phase. The formation of intermetallic compounds in the Ni-Ti-Mg ternary system was described on Ni-Ti-Mg compressed powder mixture using the differential thermal analysis. Magnesium was added to the NiTi46 wt.% mixture in an amount of 5 wt.%. The first intermetallic phases were formed at temperatures of 505 °C, and the SHS reaction started at 981 °C. Key words
